Baja Dogs is entering their 2nd year. Please help us

To All Our Fellow Animal Lovers!
|
We are still desperately looking for a new home but in the meantime we are
helping wherever we can. The other day one of our volunteers, Elvira bravely
intervened as a group of people were viscously beating a small, scared, skinny
puppy. Good news the puppy is now wagging his tail but still timid. Sandy who
is still with us is ready to go; she is a small breed dog that came in hairless
from mange. Dra Bertha and Guadalupe have done wonders. Mandy and Blackie’s
potential new people changed their minds so these 2 large dogs are still
waiting for homes( plus 4 more large breed dogs) As we told you in the last
Newsletter we had rescued a dog that was covered in ticks.
|
|
|
This picture was taken the day we found her. It took weeks to clean her up. As
you can see she was covered in ticks. When I approached her the ticks crawled
up my legs so quickly three people could not get them off me. It took hours to
get them off my body. Little children walked to school past this exact location
everyday. This is why we concentrate on educating the people on how to get rid
of ticks, fleas and parasites, spaying and neutering and healing and rehoming
the homeless. Our staff did an incredible job with this beautiful rottix.

A month later “Princessa” was healthy and happy and excited about going to her
new home!
The bad news is that we have received the first of 3 pups and a mom who are in
the same condition! It takes donations, medical supplies and lots of love to
heal these guys. We’ve got the love and desire but are short on the donations
and medical supplies. If you can help in any way please let us know. A lovely
couple from Saltspring Island BC Canada had been feeding this group for the
last month. True to their word they took one of our healthy pups north with a
promise from me that we’d try and help the other pups and their mom.

WSPA
Last month we received a visit from WSPA - World Society for Protection of
Animals. They have formally asked us to work under their umbrella and we are in
the process of submitting forms and documents. They are very careful about who
they offer help to and we are very honoured. They have and will be supplying us
with excellent printed material for use in our education program; also videos
for television spots. They also have training and support but cannot offer
funds except in an emergency situation. Guadalupe used the information at her
first school visit! We were asked to send a representative to talk to a
kindergarten class. It turned out that this was ‘mascota’ day and the children
all brought a pet; there was even a pig. Unfortunately our volunteers forgot
the camera but they sounded like they enjoyed themselves as much as the
children did.

FUNDRAISERS!
We are still in the process of opening the US Charity which will generate much
needed funds as we be able to issue tax receipts. There are 2 fundraisers being
held with proceeds going to Baja Dogs; Sidney Byars owner of La Paz Realty is
presenting an artist on Jan 26! Proceeds of a raffle donated to Baja Dogs.
Thank you Sidney A Dance with a local popular band with dates and details to be
released in February! All proceeds to Baja Dogs. Thank you Aggie!!
|
FREE SPAY AND NEUTER
Centro de Salud is going to be offering free spay and neuter Jan 28 – Jan 31.
Their brand new mobile clinic will be located in front of Baja Dogs Clinic. We
need to provide 20 dogs/cats a day so please encourage everyone you know to
have their pets sterilized during this period.
|
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We need specific volunteers at this time; volunteers to help organize the dance
(March 3 - we think) and collect items to be raffled off. We will also need
people to work the night of the dance and people to sell tickets. Please think
about volunteering.
|
PROFILES
Luke Inman, the owner of Bajastudio (www.bajastudio.com.mx)
has kindly donated their design and creative skills. They will be responsible
for all the shelter’s publicity and media needs.
Bajastudio’s operation works both locally and internationally with clients that
include Cabo Wabo and National Geographic. They are a collective group of
talented young people from all over the planet and further afield, but most
importantly they are all dog lovers!
|
HEADING NORTH!
We are working very hard to find groups and individuals in Canada and the US
that can accept and place some of our dogs. Once we can establish these ties we
will approach the airlines to provide transport. If you can suggest a person or
rescue center that may help us please call or email the name to us.

VISIT TO CSL HUMANE SOCIETY
I just visited Cabo San Lucas Humane Society. The Board members and volunteers
that I met were wonderful; extremely supportive and willing to share all their
information and expertise. I was very surprised to see that their site was the
same size as our current location and that they had 60 dogs in the shelter.
Their adoption rate is more rapid than ours because they have been very
successful in shipping dogs north. If you are driving north or flying and can
take 1 dog to its new home it would mean so much. Please think about helping us
in this manner. There is no cost to you when you assist us.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support. We could not do this without
you!! Donations of any type are welcome, food, cleaning materials,
towel/blankets, toys etc. If you do not live in La Paz and would like to donate
please donate via Paypal which is linked to our website.

To All Our Fellow Animal Lovers!
Welcome to our first monthly Newletter; December 2007. We will keep you informed
about what we are doing and ways you can help our Baja Dogs!
Our 8th month and still going...... that is a feat in itself! We have survived
with help and support from many of you. In the past I have worked with animal
rescue groups and rescued many dogs, one at a time. Running the refugio has
been a learning experience. You just never know what tomorrow will bring.
What keeps us going when we are all tired and low on funds?? The look of
gratitude in the eyes of a badly beaten and abused dog. Since we have opened we
have treated many cases of abuse and neglect and have only had to bury one
little guy who just didn't have the strength to fight any longer. He had been
hit by a car and left to die. We just got there too late. Happier endings
include dogs like Pinto a beautiful dalmation was badly burned by his owners;
he did not utter a sound when he was treated. Neighbours had witnessed this
horrid abuse and brought him to us. Afterwards he always smiled at us which was
terrifying to new comers. Pinto is living with a very nice young couple who
have one small child. We try to visit all the homes and check up on 'our dogs'.
Paula had 3 inch toenails and no fur due to extreme malnutrition and
dehydration. Once healed she was very beautiful and exotic looking. Her
rescuers adopted her and she lives locally. Ivan was scalped from the tip of
his head to his tail. Some children that have been through our Respect of
Animals class found him and brought him to the refugio When he healed he was
adopted by one of our volunteers. Princessa a beautiful rotti x doberman was so
infested with ticks we thought her ears were grey when we saw her at a
distance. The doctors could not pull them off as there were way too many and
would cause massive bleeding so they left her tied to a telephone pole and
bathed her with a solution that caused the ticks to fall off and die. We had to
leave her tied d own the street for over 1 week and delivered food and water to
her. She was adopted last week. We are picking up a little guy today that was
rescued by 2 Canadians. They heard him yelping in pain. A homeless man was
cutting off his little tail, for fish bait, for fun? This kind couple rushed
him to a vet and he will be staying with us probably for an extended period of
time before he becomes adoptable. I could go on and on as most dogs we do take
in have had some type of trauma.
We have treated and adopted 46 dogs since we opened. We spay and neuter all
dogs that are 3 months older or more. They all receive their vaccines.
Last Sunday we participated in the Subasta held by Fanlap(Fundacion Auyda Ninos
La Paz A.C.). We adopted out 8 dogs and raised 2000 pesos. December 14, 15, 16
we will be taking part in the Rotary Christmas Festival on the Malecon. We are
hoping to raise our profile, get names of volunteers, sell a few items and
receive donations! Please come by and see us. It sounds like it will be a
beautiful Christmas event.
We have to move!
We are currently looking for property. Because of this we are not accepting any
dogs for the next 2 months. Exceptions to this rule mean that any dog we take
in will have to come to one of our homes as in the little 'tail' pup. Our
numbers swelled to 35 dogs on 2 ocassions. This was a lot of dogs for our
current location. We have 7 dogs waiting for homes. It is likely that Grande,
Blackie, Sissy and Mandy will have to go to ranches if they can't be placed
within 2 weeks. If you know of a great place for one of these 4 big dogs please
call me asap 128 8235. Kiwi is a smaller male dog that would make a great guard
dog. He should sleep IN at night. Jack an old timer and Pita who has a lung
tumour will live the rest of their lives with us. Temon... 3 legged Temon was
found in a ditch where he had been lying for some time after being hit by a
car. He needs a special home. He is only starting to allow men near him. We
have 2 pups that should be adoptable soon. Buffalo and Tomasa will remain a bit
longer. That only leaves Ardilla who was last seen was running around in a Mrs
Santa suit made by our staff! This little dog has quite a wardrobe.
Now the bad and realistic parts! We need help. All types of help.
People help
-
people to make items that we can sell such as dog coats, bandanas, beds
whatever you can think off that will generate donations. If you would be
willing to do this on an on going basis it would be wonderful. If you can sew
call us!
-
volunteers to help at our various functions. There would be 2 types of
fundraisers; one a higher profile dance and the other ongoing booth type events
where you will be helping bring the dogs in to the location and adopt them out.
-
when we get the land we need volunteer builders etc. (Doesn't matter if you
don't know what a hammer is, we'll show you. Strength counts)
-
people to donate 4 hours a week or month AT the Refuge. It is hard to keep
paying staff.

Someone to help with this Newsletter!
Donations
You can donate directly or through Paypal. We are a
registered mexican charity and have been awaiting our official tax related
receipts for months. We are now hearing that the Mexican government will not
allow dog related charities to issue official receipts. This is being
investigated. We are also planning on opening a US charity. Be assured every
cent of your donation goes to aid animals! If you can please help us by
donating or helping we would be very grateful. Forward this newsletter on to
friends and families. If you are aware of any rescue groups or individuals in
the US or Canada that will foster and look for good homes please tell us. We
are making arrangements for some of our furry guests to cross the border!
We now have our own publicist and a lawyer. We will introduce both to you in
the next Newsletter!!
Please if you can help in any way call myself 128 8235 or the Refugio 124 8433
(mornings)
We will be changing and updating our website in a very short while.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you are not interested in
receiving another update let us know. If you enjoyed it pass it on to other dog
lovers. Remember La Paz NEEDS a Refugio but we cannot do it alone.

BAJA DOGS HELPLINE OF LA PAZ
We need to expand!
Posted: August 25, 2007
We are actively looking for a larger piece of property that we can use as a new
refuge. This property should not be in a residential area and be within 20km of
our current location.
We are overloaded with puppies that need homes.
Can you adopt or foster, even for only several months. We also have older dogs
needing homes for any length of time you can provide.
As always, we need donations of flea products, dog food and any type of
portable kennel, or just some of your time.
PayPal System Running!
